Pieter Both is not a pure climbing mountain but an adventurous ascent with climbing sections. Even via ferrata enthusiasts will find a short section!

Pieter Both is a mountain in Mauritius that cannot be overlooked, on whose peak a huge boulder is balancing. An ascent is not easy. Initially, you walk through vegetable gardens, then ascend through bushes in a gully with slippery, mostly wet rocks, until after a traverse in steep meadow terrain the summit highlight follows. After overcoming two short steep steps along the ridge by climbing, you reach the summit rock, which overhangs on all sides. With the help of hand and foot holds, you get to the tiny summit plateau after an athletic start and enjoy standing on an extraordinary summit.

Since the climbing sections are only short (equipped with bolts), it is not possible to give information about wall height, approach, etc. Essentially, it is an alpine ascent of a mountain with climbing sections.

Unfortunately, the original altitude data of the GPX track recording were not adopted by the system and therefore do not match the original at the summit area. The track itself is exact! Maps also show a deviation of the summit from the original point by up to 100m.

    Author’s recommendation

Long pants and long-sleeved upper clothing are recommended for the ascent through the bushes.

    Safety information

Dogs at the starting point – slippery dirty rocks in the ascent gully – also be cautious when traversing right towards the summit rise – the short fixed ropes present in the two steep sections along the summit ridge are not trustworthy – some old hand/foot holds on the summit rock are almost completely rusted through.

    Roadbook

From the parking possibility at the end of the asphalt road, walk 200m along a driveway uphill towards the clearly visible summit to a junction. Keeping right, continue 400m without gaining altitude past vegetable gardens, until plastic bottles fixed to bush branches appear, serving as trail markers. Now the path turns left and gains altitude. Keep going straight through the bushes (watch for the plastic bottles—occasionally you can also find barely visible arrows on rocks). The terrain gradually becomes steeper until you reach rocky terrain in the now distinct gully. Two rock steps with wet and slippery rock (bolts - II+) must be overcome before the barely visible path turns right (bolts on a rock block) and traverses a steep slope almost horizontally through bushes and meadows. After a short ascent, you stand on a flat area in front of the steep summit formation. Over a meadow ridge, which falls steeply on both sides, you reach the first short rocky steep step (bolts - III+), then another rock section (bolts - III), and finally the summit rock. The overhanging rock is overcome with the help of hand/foot holds. Since the first hold is more than 2m high and there is no foothold for the feet, you either have to swing athletically upward or attach slings to the first hold to climb up. The further ascent to the highest point over the holds then presents no difficulties.

During the descent, it is also possible to rappel at the difficult spots.
