The small village of Oberammergau with 5000 inhabitants in the district of Garmisch Patenkirchen lies idyllically surrounded by picturesque mountains and forests. It is known, besides its high recreational value, also for the passion plays held every 10 years and the unique NATO School in Germany.
Our starting point, the valley station of the Laberbergbahn, is an attraction for tourists and nature lovers from the region in both summer and winter.
However, on this route, you stay a bit off the marked paths and rarely encounter many people.

Roadbook
We start from the Laberbergbahn parking lot, where we also leave our car. From here, we can already clearly see the destination, the Reindlkante, as a rock massif.
We start directly opposite the valley station of the Laberbergbahn. It goes uphill on the marked hiking trail towards Laber. On both sides of the gravel path are picturesque mountain meadows and apple trees. After about ten minutes, we pass a wooden bench on the right-hand side and shortly after, the path forks. At the fork, we turn left (towards the east) onto the forest road towards Soile-Alm. After about 500 m, we see a fountain on the left of the forest road. This is our starting point to leave the designated paths.
Shortly after the fountain, we see to our right a pathless forest clearing (a meadow fence must be climbed over), which reaches up to the rock massif. We go up this forest clearing (partly on distinct tracks but pathless). On the last third of the clearing, the forest floor changes to scree. Arriving at the rock massif, we bypass the lower 50 m of the ridge on the right (towards the east) to the start. This is located above a small notch at the right end of a rock cave. From here, you already have a great view of Oberammergau.
From here a climbing helmet MUST be worn, as we are already in the rockfall area. Just below the start, right at a tree, is a good place to have a snack and put on your climbing equipment. We leave our remaining equipment (backpacks, mountain boots, etc.) in the rock cave, as nothing is very likely to be stolen here.
Now the climbing begins.
1st pitch: Right of the cave at the start, we climb a slightly overhanging wall. Now you stand on a small ledge from which we keep left (towards the north). Over another overhang, we come directly to the ridge. Here it is less steep, and you climb through many dwarf pines up to a small rock window. This is the perfect place for the first belay station and for beautiful photos of the breathtaking landscape.
2nd pitch: From the first belay at the rock window, go right (towards the southeast) past a steep, almost vertical ramp. Now comes a traverse between roots and large dwarf pines until we reach our second belay, located at a round, clearly recognizable rock edge.
3rd pitch: The third pitch is the most beautiful and the most difficult of the route. Left around the round rock edge, you stand exposed on a narrow ledge. Under our feet is nothing but about 200 m of air and eventually the forest floor. We are now on the north face, and the rock is very smooth here. From here, we keep slightly right (towards the southwest) and climb steeply straight up to some dwarf pines where we have attached slings for protection. From here, we climb vertically along the exposed ridge. There are a few bolts and rock knobs for protection. At the top, there is a gnarled old tree where we have set up our final belay station. From here, the highest point, you enjoy a picture-book landscape.
After the tree, go right through a rock gate to the descent. From now on, go downhill only on the clearly visible fixed ropes. We go over relatively steep, rocky and earthy terrain (caution rockfall) back to the start where we take off our climbing equipment and collect our backpacks.
Take off climbing shoes, put on mountain boots, and go down the same way we came up. Over the scree and forest clearing back to the path to the fork and then past the wooden bench and apple trees to the Laberbergbahn parking lot where our car is waiting.
