Großer Widderstein - southwest face
Classic, winding line through one of the most impressive Allgäu walls.
The easiest but also most alpine route in the wall.
The southwest face of the Großer Widderstein is considered one of the most rewarding climbing walls in the Allgäu Alps. In the coarse-grained dolomite, several multi-pitch routes between upper grade 6 and lower grade 8 climb steeply up. The most popular route is probably the well-protected six-combination. Clearly easier but also much more alpine and probably therefore quite rarely climbed is the (old) southwest face. Those coming from the Hochalppass who see the wall for the first time might hardly believe that a light line runs through this seemingly vertical section of rock, barely exceeding grade IV. But appearances are deceptive: vertical, partly even overhanging rock belts, only possible in the lower difficulty grades thanks to the extremely grippy dolomite, alternate with easy walking terrain on inclined ledges and terraces.
