Great limestone ridge climb of difficulty grade 3 on grippy rock. Descent via normal route somewhat polished.
The Altmann, at 2435 m, is the second highest mountain of the Alpstein and the Appenzell Alps overall. It is located on the border between the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen in Switzerland.
The East Ridge is a great climbing route. The route is perfectly equipped and you will find pitons at regular intervals (approx. 5-10 m) depending on difficulty.
Author’s recommendation
On the descent, it is also possible to rappel down the Schaffhauser chimney (difficulty grade 2).
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

There is often a herd of ibex in the entry area.
Roadbook
From Wildhaus towards Zwinglipass. Shortly after the Zwinglipass hut, take the path left towards Rotsteinpass, then right to the start of the East Ridge (approx. 30 minutes from the hut).
Start: the path is sometimes blocked by a herd of ibex ;-)
It goes steeply uphill from the start on grippy rock. After about 4 pitches, there is a belay on a rock ledge. On the upper pitches, the ridge narrows, ending with a small ridge about 10 m high and 50 cm wide. Afterwards, easy terrain (I-II), climb out of a gully to the left until you reach the summit cross directly.
Descent via the normal route.
Fairly airy and partly very polished in easy climbing (I) down. Follow the hiking trail towards Jöchli and continue to Wildhaus.
