Complementary activity to civil security missions, cynotechnics is oriented towards Civil Protection for the search of missing, lost, or buried persons.
The pairs (handler and dog) are declared operational after validations passed before a jury that checks the skills and demeanor of candidates for integration within the Federal Cynotechnical Unit.
MISSIONS AND TECHNIQUES
Likely to be called in reinforcement by State services (Prefect, Mayor, Gendarmerie, Police) or by a disaster-stricken country, to find missing, lost, or buried persons, the dogs are divided into three different technical specialties:
TRACKING DOGS, which use as reference the scents emanating from a personal object of the missing person and trace the itinerary starting from the place where the person was last seen.
SEARCH DOGS IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS, which patrol a defined perimeter, for example in a forest, and indicate by barking any person present. They are very useful for quickly finding missing persons in rural areas without needing many human resources.
RUBBLE DOGS, which are able to locate people buried in the remains of a collapsed structure, following an explosion or earthquake.
ORIGIN OF DOG HANDLERS
The dog handlers of Civil Protection are primarily volunteers who dedicate their passion to serving their fellow citizens.
PREREQUISITES TO BECOME A HANDLER IN THE FEDERAL CYNOTECHNICAL UNIT
The volunteers of ADPC 77. Their training is long and takes place over a period of about two years.
The dogs used belong to the handlers and live daily with them.
TEAM TRAINING
Dog handlers must undergo long and rigorous training to reach a high level of professionalism and be declared "operational".
Dogs do not work alone but in pairs with their handler, hence the importance of developing a strong bond within the pair.
Dog training begins at a very young age.
The use of a search dog therefore requires knowledge of the physiological and behavioral needs of the animal to ensure its well-being.
The human-dog pair must follow regular, mandatory training sessions, with their level validated by individuals outside their close circle.
