Almost one hundred kilometers southeast of Berlin is a unique landscape in Central Europe - the Spreewald. After the last Ice Age, the Spree here split into a finely branched network of streams, which, as the name Spreewald suggests, once meandered through dense primeval forest. The special charm of the Spreewald lies in its park-like landscape, crisscrossed by numerous streams. Cultivation has created a mosaic of small meadows, fields, and forest, as well as the network of waterways.
Today, the Spreewald is a human-shaped yet largely natural floodplain landscape and thus a habitat for a rich variety of animals and plants. Species still live here that are threatened or already extinct elsewhere. To protect and preserve this landscape, the Spreewald was declared a biosphere reserve in 1990 and received UNESCO status in 1991.
It is part of a worldwide network of 748 biosphere reserves, which, according to the UNESCO "Man and Biosphere" (MAB) program, aim to protect historically developed cultural landscapes as examples and to develop them sustainably.
