Geschäftsstelle Biosphärengebiet Schwäbische Alb Verified partner
Blooming traditional orchards, juniper heaths grazed by sheep, and lush green beech forests characterize the Swabian Alb and the Alb foothills. A cultural landscape developed over centuries, unique worldwide and worth preserving for future generations. For this reason, UNESCO designated the region in the heart of Baden-Württemberg as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009. The protected area lies south of Stuttgart and extends from Reutlingen to Schelklingen and from Weilheim an der Teck to Zwiefalten. About 150,000 people live on an area of approx. 85,300 hectares in 29 towns and municipalities. Model ideas are developed and tested here on how humans and nature can coexist as equals. Within the framework of many sustainable projects, the core idea “living and working in harmony with nature” is successfully implemented in intensive cooperation with partners and a large number of other stakeholders in the Swabian Alb biosphere reserve.
