Geography in Kiel is understood as integrative, theory-driven, practice-oriented, and cooperative

Integrative is, in our understanding, geography per se: within the subject, we connect social science and natural science thinking, in human geography we link spatially related economic, social, and cultural scientific approaches, and in physical geography we deal with integrative approaches to landscape, coastal, or climate development.

A fundamental part of our courses of study are the major excursions. They enable students to apply theoretically learned concepts and methods directly in practice, which deepens the understanding of processes and makes the learning content vivid. Excursions offer the opportunity to observe and analyze geographical phenomena, landscapes, cities, and environmental processes directly on site. The group experience promotes social skills, and students broaden their understanding of different cultures, ways of life, and economic and social structures. Through engagement with real, complex environmental situations and societal challenges, students learn to think critically and develop solutions for concrete problems.
