Urban Davos, idyllic Klosters
Davos Klosters is one of the most famous vacation destinations in the world and has the most complete range of vacation, sports and meeting facilities in the mountains. Although the contrast between urban Davos and idyllic Klosters could not be greater, both places, which are only ten minutes away by car, have one thing in common: the fascinating mountain nature.
Davos is the highest town in Europe and is famous for the variety of sporting, leisure and cultural activities on offer, its healing climate, HC Davos, the Spengler Cup, the Kirchner Museum, the World Economic Forum and the partying freestyle scene on the Jakobshorn. Davos originally owes its importance to its healing climate, which has been known for around 150 years. The first Davos guesthouse opened in 1860 to accommodate spa guests. The immigrant German doctor Alexander Spengler created a recumbent cure for lung patients, which primarily involved plenty of sleep on the Davos sun terraces and Veltliner wine. This method made Davos world-famous and was immortalized in Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain", published in 1924. In addition to Mann, numerous other writers, artists and philosophers traveled to Davos. They brought their own culture with them, made the resort famous in their works or initiated the sports, event and cultural offerings that we take for granted today.
Davos was at the forefront of the development of modern winter sports. The history of the world-famous Davos sledge began in the 19th century. The sledge got its name at the first historic sledge race in Davos in 1883. In 1921, the Davos Hockey Club was founded in Davos, which today is both a myth and a living legend. The Spengler Cup, first held in 1923, is the oldest and most prestigious international ice hockey tournament in the world. The Parsenn Derby is the most traditional ski race in Switzerland and was held for the first time in 1924. Ten years later, the first ever T-bar ski lift was put into operation on the Bolgen. In modern times, Davos made headlines when it founded the freestyle scene in the 1980s. At that time, the Jakobshorn was the only mountain on which snowboarders were allowed to use the lifts.
Klosters is a picture-perfect alpine resort: a chic chalet-style village, authentic traditions and an international character thanks to its many cosmopolitan residents. This is probably why even royal guests feel at home here. Klosters became famous as a winter and summer resort over 100 years ago. A decisive impetus for its development into a stylish vacation classic for connoisseurs came in the 1950s. At that time, many famous names from the American and British film, music and theater scene discovered the ski resort, earning it the nickname "Hollywood on the Rocks". In the wake of this era, many British and American guests were drawn to Klosters and found their second home here. They shaped the style and atmosphere of the resort for decades, and their children are still doing so today.
