The municipality of Ehrwald lies on the west side of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in the Wetterstein group, at almost 1000 metres above sea level. As the home of three ski areas with many top-prepared slopes, Ehrwald is popular with winter fans. But the mountains around Ehrwald can also be explored with skins on your skis or splitboard. Spectacular views and racy downhill runs between the Zugspitze and Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze await you here.

The stage from the Zugspitze to Biberwier especially satisfies downhill enthusiasts. Right at the start, great deep powder slopes await, with usually the best powder found on the Zugspitzplatt. On the descent to the Ehrwalder Alm, you may already find spring snow with luck, and the finale offers powder again on the steep terrain of the Langlehn.

A Transalp with bike or on foot is still something special, but nowadays more of a fashion route. In winter, however, crossing the Alps on skis is a solitary adventure with magnificent deep snow descents. The plan: In five days from the wintry northern side of the Alps to spring, to the Mediterranean Meran with its palm trees.

Impressive ski route at a steep rock backdrop, rewarded with a beautiful long descent. Even in spring, good powder is often found in the north-facing cirque. Using the Ehrwalder Almbahn can save you 400 meters of ascent.

Ski tours on the Ehrwalder Alm and in the Mieminger Range

The Ehrwalder Alm is the family ski area near Ehrwald, but also offers ski tourers a good starting point for challenging ski tours. Depending on your motivation and physical condition, you can use the cable car for the first few metres up the mountain or climb along the piste. At the bottom of the ski area, the beautiful cirques of the Mieminger Kette come into view, which promise a great touring experience in safe conditions.

The Igelskar, the Schwarzbachkar and the Brendlkar are the classic destinations that can be reached after a short descent from the ski area. These tours are all great in terms of scenery and the snow quality in the north-facing cirques is often very good for a long time.

Tip for alpine skiers: Grünstein bypass

A difficult ski mountaineering undertaking starts in the neighbouring village of Ehrwald, in Biberwier. The small village, which lies between Ehrwald's Sonnenspitze and Grubigstein, is the starting point for this great ski tour classic, which requires safe conditions and a good deal of stamina. From the car park of the Marienberg lifts, you can take the cable cars or go under your own steam to the Marienbergjoch and then on to the Hölltörl. After another ascent, you reach the Grünbergscharte and the descent to Ehrwald, where you return to the valley via the Ehrwalder Alm.
