Trails in Transilvania

Transylvania lies in the southern part of the Carpathians. It is almost identical to the legendary Transylvania from which Count Dracula originated. If you spend your holidays in the heart of Romania, you can search for traces combining nature with culture.

The wooded mountains of Transylvania lie 100 kilometres northwest of Bucharest. You may still find here real primeval forests, although the people live in the immediate vicinity and have been using the land and forest for decades.

Forecast for Transylvania

10-day forecast

Transylvania is especially suitable for tracking. Typically the summer in the mountains is very warm, however in the months of May and June it rains frequently. The main hiking season is between July and October.

The hiker should have a good prepared equipment with first aid bag because there is no area-wide mountain rescue in the Carpathians.

If you want to travel undamaged in the Carpathians, you should not only pay attention to the general alpine dangers such as storms and avalanches, but also to the often very aggressive shepherd dogs. The best way to avoid flocks of sheep is to bypass them when no shepherd is in sight.

I would rate this route as hard, because the dirt road is rather rocky. This means that you don't have such a good grip and it's not so comfortable to ride it for some 50 km. Other than that it's a lovely scenery for the most part. You may come across some sheep here and there, but the dogs guarding them are well behaved and don't bother you. There are a couple of springs from where you can replenish your water supply. Most of the time there is no shade, so be prepared accordingly. For our group of 3 it was exactly 6h of bike time, but 8h30m overall (including breaks). We ran it in reverse, because we preferred to have a longer, steady, mild climb instread of an abrupt climb and a long descent.

It was fun, but the only thing what bothered me was the big trucks, what made a huge dust…they don’t even slow down. But this was only on the beginning of the gravel road, after that it was fine! 👌
