High above the Müglitz Valley - the jewel of Saxon Renaissance architecture - Lauenstein Castle. The main castle has been extensively renovated and restored over the past three decades and is now home to the Osterzgebirgsmuseum.
The mining town of Lauenstein impressively reflects the mining history of the past centuries with its castle and the church of St. Marien and Laurentin.
Lauenstein was first mentioned in writing in 1242. The castle with its gatehouse, farm buildings, main palace and gardens is essentially in the Renaissance style.
The reconstructed park and the castle garden with its typical useful and ornamental plants frame the unique castle grounds.
Special exhibitions and concerts provide a varied and cultural offering.
Lauenstein Castle is an important (contemporary) testimony to the Erzgebirge/Krusnohori mining region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the Osterzgebirgsmuseum, founded in 1979, presents a diverse exhibition for the whole family.
- Permanent exhibition on the history of the Kursächsische Postmeilensäulen and railroad history in the Müglitz Valley
- Presentation of the life and works of the master builder of the Dresden Frauenkirche, George Bähr
- Development of the Eastern Ore Mountains landscape with its forests and stone ridges
