From Tossa de Mar to Girona
A stage that begins by the sea and ends in the hinterland—from coastal panoramas through Mediterranean forests to the agricultural plains of Girona. From Tossa de Mar, the route climbs through the Cadiretes Massif and then continues along rural paths until it joins the Carrilet Greenway and reaches Girona. An ideal day’s hike to enjoy the transition between mountains, nature, and the city.
From the Sea to the Cadiretes Massif
We leave Tossa de Mar and head inland, leaving the coast behind us to enter the Cadiretes Massif—a protected natural area featuring holm oaks, cork oaks, and Mediterranean pine forests. The climb is steady through dense vegetation, with shaded sections and occasional views back toward the sea. As we gain elevation, the landscape opens up, revealing the Vidreres plain and, on the horizon, the Montseny Massif. A quiet, nature-filled section on trails that are partly rocky but easy to ride.
Descent and Transition to the Girona Plain
After reaching the highest point, a long descent follows along the Camí de Caulès, which leads us out of the massif and into the vast, open countryside surrounding Girona. We pass under the highway and ride through fields, small farmsteads, and sparse forests of pine and holm oak. The terrain is flat and easy to ride—perfect for maintaining a steady pace. We pass through Cassà de la Selva and Quart, quiet villages surrounded by farmland where the atmosphere of the Girona plain is already clearly evident.
Carrilet Greenway to Girona
In Quart, we come to the Carrilet Girona–Sant Feliu de Guíxols Greenway—a former railroad line that is now one of the most pleasant cycling routes in the region. The well-maintained path winds through forests and cultivated meadows, partly following the course of the Onyar River. Restored railroad bridges and wooden walkways lend the route a special charm. The approach to Girona is gradual: Even from a distance, you can see the Old Town and the cathedral. Once in the city, we can park our bikes and stroll through the cobblestone alleys, discovering the city’s Roman and medieval traces—and, of course, visiting the Jewish quarter, one of the best-preserved in Europe. A perfect place to end the stage with a cup of coffee.
