Wolf Trail stage 7
East of the Dolomites, the terrain gradually decreases in altitude, but remains challenging: the tour runs through the mountain ranges of the Carnic and Julian Alps as well as through the more remote landscapes of Friuli. Forests, narrow valleys and long, sometimes steep climbs characterize this section. The further you walk towards the Adriatic coast, the more often the high mountain landscape gives way to Mediterranean-influenced vegetation zones. The last few kilometers finally lead down to the Adriatic coast to Muggia, south of Trieste. Here the alpine part of the Wolf Trail meets its final dissolution in the sea - an impressive conclusion after weeks at high altitudes.
This final stage is the most alpine, longest and most challenging of the entire trail: large differences in altitude, long mountain passages and an enormous variety of landscapes make it the clear queen stage. It combines panoramic views of the Dolomites, alpine transitions and Mediterranean coastal landscapes - a transition from rugged limestone to warm light, sea views and an Italian lifestyle.
