GR38 OLR - Muradal Pangea (International Trail of the Appalachians)
Along the route, the points of interest to discover are majestic, among which are the splendid natural viewpoints atop the rocky ridges, such as Picoto, Cardai, Penha Alta, Zebro, Vilar, and Mosqueiro. From these spots, one can admire an impressive territory area, highlighting the reliefs of the Serra da Estrela, Gardunha, Açor, Alvelos, Cabeço da Rainha, Lousã, Monsanto, the vast plain of Castelo Branco stretching towards Spain, at the feet of the Serra de Gata and Gredos. Another type of heritage valued by the Great Route is geological. This can be appreciated at the Penha Alta Quarry, the paleontological site of Portelo, Muradal's Picoto, the Zebro Viewpoint, the Áqua D' Alta Crag, and the Cabeço Mosqueiro Viewpoint. Various fossils are visible in these places, allowing the reconstruction of the environments where the quartzite rocks originally formed—then an extensive beach of fine sand where a mysterious extinct organism lived more than 400 million years ago, responsible for the curious spiral forms so special that cover the rocks. Nowhere else in the world is there such a large area densely composed of these forms, which can be followed for kilometers.
At the very ridge, the archaeological heritage is astonishing due to its location. On the other hand, it describes the millennial human occupation of the settlement in this territory, highlighted by the Iron Age Castro at Picoto. In this idyllic setting of quartzitic ridges, the shades of botanical landscape with great interest appear, forming a natural painting covered with extensive green, from heathers to strawberry trees, which throughout the year is tinted with melliferous shades of yellow, red, pink, and white. Sensations and emotions are constant along the Great Route's extension. Freedom is certain. The contact with the natural silence and scents is inexplicable. Walking and "reaching the sky" is surprising. It means knowing places with "stories", legends, cultures, and sciences. It means being able to refresh with a natural dip in the Olhos de Fervença. It means having the freshness of the Áqua D'Alta Crag. It means feeling the power of discovering nature.
