The Gardunha Route starts at the entrance of Louriçal do Campo, passes by the Church of S. Bento (16th century), and follows the streets until leaving the village through gardens and olive groves, heading towards the slopes of the mountain range.

The trail continues between loose stone walls leading to a pine forest intersection, where the path to the top of the mountain is found, passing near the Jesuit cross summit, winding among the chaos of boulders.

The vegetation diversifies with the presence of large cork oaks and patches of kermes oak. At a curve, there is an intersection that allows shortening the route through the PR1.1 variant and provides access to interesting picnic areas and viewpoints, heading towards Casal da Serra.

The longer variant climbs towards Bandeira, passing a picnic area and equipped climbing routes. At the junction for Castelo Novo, one of the most famous viewpoints in Gardunha appears, offering an immense panorama of the amphitheater of this historic village.

Further ahead is the realm of granite formations, true geological monuments, at the top of Castelo Velho (1443m). From here, the path descends towards Casal da Serra, crossing numerous springs and water catchments.

Next to the Municipal Services house, a trail leads to the magnificent gorge of the Ocreza river, where stone levadas provide access to secluded natural pools of crystal-clear water separated by beautiful waterfalls and to 18 watermills hidden among the exuberant diversity of riparian flora.

After reaching Torre and crossing the river, you arrive at Louriçal do Campo via São Sebastião street, passing through gardens and paths flanked by large loose stone walls.

    Author’s recommendation

The PR1.1 variant allows shortening the route and avoiding the steepest incline as you climb the mountain. This route should be done counterclockwise. Due to the steep slope and length, this route is physically demanding.
