Commissioned by Matilda of Canossa after her victory over Emperor Henry IV, the Abbey of Monteveglio is part of the ancient medieval village of Monteveglio Alto. The church, in Romanesque style and consisting of three naves, was built between the 11th and 12th centuries over an earlier house of worship. Inside you can admire an altar with five columns made of red marble from Verona, a 15th-century wooden crucifix, a crypt with a Romanesque tombstone and a stoup from the Lombard period. Also part of the complex are two cloisters, one of which has been partially destroyed.
From the 11th to the 15th century, the abbey was entrusted to the Canons Regular of San Frediano of Lucca, after which management passed to the Lateran Canons of San Giovanni in Monte of Bologna until 1796. It is now home to the Community of the Brothers of St. Francis, which organizes guided tours of the monastic complex.
Opening times
The church can be visited daily from 6:30 am to noon and 3 pm to 7:30 pm. The inner cloister is open to the public only on Sundays and holidays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The medieval village, on the other hand, is always open.
