Mount Vulture is an extinct volcano in the province of Potenza, Basilicata.
Mount Vulture was active until the Upper Pleistocene, about 130,000 years ago. Today it is a place of lush vegetation and incredible biodiversity. With an altitude of 1,326 metres, it is also a beautiful destination for hiking and mountain biking. Its slopes are home to the picturesque Monticchio lakes, located within the main crater and surrounded by chestnut and beech forests. Thanks to its isolated position, it offers a splendid panoramic view of the surrounding area.
The area surrounding the ancient volcano, which has been under the protection of the Vulture Regional Natural Park since 2017, is also famous for the production of Aglianico del Vulture wine, the Marroncino di Melfi PDO chestnut and mineral water.
