Founded as a hospital - one of the oldest in Europe - for pilgrims on the Via Francigena and abandoned children, the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala includes a large number of different rooms, such as a church, several chapels, tunnels carved into the tuff, the old hospital, the Old Sacristy frescoed by Lorenzo di Pietro, and ancient storerooms. An important place of great splendour is the Pellegrinaio, a room decorated with important 15th-century fresco cycles.

Within its walls, the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala houses the National Archaeological Museum, the Treasure of Santa Maria La Scala, the Children's Art Museum, a library and photo library, as well as the original Fonte Gaia, a copy of which can be found in Piazza del Campo.
