Majestic Marian shrine in the heart of the Biella Pre-Alps, pilgrimage destination, symbol of spirituality, included in the UNESCO Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy Site
The Sanctuary of the Black Madonna of Oropa, located at an altitude of 1180 metres, is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Piedmont and probably the oldest Marian shrine in the West. Although the oldest historical documents relating to the sanctuary date back to the 13th century, legend has it that the holy Bishop of Vercelli, Eusebius, in 369, during a persecution, preserved in a niche of an erratic boulder an alleged wooden statue of the Madonna, which he brought to Oropa from Jerusalem. During the plague of 1599, the city of Biella vowed to build a new church, and so the present sanctuary was built after the demolition of the 13th-century church. Later, between 1600 and 1800, the entire complex was enriched with two squares. The majestic new church, with a large dome visible from most of the Biella area, was begun in 1885 but only partially completed in 1960.
