The Baptistery of San Giovanni is located in front of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
An octagonal building with a pyramidal roof with a diameter of 25.6 metres, the baptistery has medieval origins and is covered with white and green marble. Of particular note are its three bronze doors, one made by Andrea Pisano and the other two by Lorenzo Ghiberti, representing different scenes from the Bible. The third, the main one, located to the east, is completely gilded and is known as the 'Gate of Paradise'.
In the past, all Florentines were baptised here and knights and poets were invested.
Opening times
Every first Sunday of the month, the baptistery closes at 14:00.
