The cathedral of Naples, with the official name of Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is one of the largest and most important churches in the city. Also part of the cathedral complex are the Basilica of Santa Restituta and the Chapel of San Gennaro.
The church was built between 1290 and 1313, incorporating or replacing structures dating back to the early Christian period. Due to several earthquakes, the church underwent reconstruction and restoration several times; in fact, it has several architectural styles. The present facade dates from the 19th century and is in neo-Gothic style. The interior of the church is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and ten side chapels. Among the latter are:
- the Basilica of Santa Restituta, the oldest church in the city (dating back to the 4th century), which houses the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, the oldest baptistery in the Western world;
- the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, where the relics of the patron saint of Naples are kept.
The cathedral is famous for the "miracle of San Gennaro": a ceremony is held with the two ampullae in which the saint's blood is kept, normally kept in the High Altar, during which people expect to witness the "prodigy of liquefaction," which is seen as an auspicious sign. The event takes place three times a year - on the first Sunday in May, Sept. 19 and Dec. 16 - and attracts many faithful and onlookers.
From the Chapel of St. Gennaro there is direct access to the Museum of the Treasure of St. Gennaro, where paintings, statues, busts, jewelry and precious textiles that the saint received as gifts over the years are preserved.
