The Charterhouse of San Martino was founded in 1325 by Charles of Anjou and housed the monks of the Carthusian order until 1866. Since then it has housed the National Museum of San Martino, which tells the artistic and cultural history of Naples through works of art, cribs, carriages and historical relics.
The Charterhouse includes a church, two cloisters and a number of other rooms, hanging gardens and Gothic basements. The Charterhouse was extended and renovated over the centuries, taking on an increasingly baroque appearance. It is one of the largest and most important monumental complexes in the city of Naples.
