Kainuu Tervareitti: Katerma portage for paddlers, Kuhmo
The Katerma portage serves as a safe bypass route to avoid the hydroelectric power plant when moving from Ontojärvi to Ontojoen.
The Katerma portage is a suitable bypass route for paddlers on the Kainuu Tervareitti water hiking route when moving from Ontojärvi side to Ontojoen.
Landing is done at the Katerma boat shore, from where you proceed along roads below the power plant. The shore has a gravel-bottomed boat ramp. The landing site is easy to find. Below the power plant, you can easily enter Ontojoki from a grassy shore.
Note that the river starting after the Heinälahdentie bridge up to the power plant is a canal, where landing is not possible. Use this portage route instead.
Author’s recommendation
Both landing sites have a fireplace, but no firewood supply.
