Saarikoski, located near the centre of Kuhmo, is the last of the Pajakkajoki rapids. Grayling and trout can be fished with both fly and bait.

The River Pajakkajoki is divided into two fishing areas, Pajakkakoski rapid and Saarikoski rapid. Whereas Saarikoski rapid is left in its natural, wild state. From Lake Ontojärvi, large trout rise to the rapid and the grayling stock is strong. Saarikoski is part of the same concession area as Pajakkakoski.

Saarikoski rapid is three hundred metres long and tens of metres wide. The main stream and the tributary on the south bank are crossed by a long rocky boulder ("möljä"), which ends in an island dividing the lower part of the rapids. Wading gear is essential if you want to fish the main river from the möljä. However, when the water is high, wading across the tributary can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with the rapids. The south bank tributary also offers good fishing spots. Both banks are open to fishing at Saarikoski, although the south bank is more popular.

Along the whole way of teh northern shore of Pajakkakoski there is a rowing boat pulling track. It's easy to move on it also on foot and casts from there easily reach the fishing spots in the fierce midstream.

PADDLING:

  • The descent follows the main current along the right side of the island. Rapid class I/II, drop height 1,7 m.

The rapid can be bypassed by following the rowing boat track on the left bank or, at shallow water, by pulling along the rocky right bank.
