The Akonkoski rapid, located halfway along the Pajakka River, is reserved for fly fishing. The Kainuun Tervareitti water hiking trail runs from Kuhmo to Sotkamo via Akonkoski.
The eco-fishing destination Akonkoski is nestled in the middle of the Pajakka River, just a few kilometres from the centre of Kuhmo. Dedicated to fly-fishing, the rapids offer experiences for the surface fly-fisher as well as the nymph or trout streamer. Grayling strikes eagerly at the fly, and in the turbulent currents of the main stream, there are also robust trout living in the Pajakka River in their natural, wild state. Only club licences are sold for Akonkoski.
The uninhabited southern bank is accessed via the Saarikoski road. It is a couple of hundred metres of hiking to the shore. A rowing boat is available on the south bank for the use of those who reserve the rapids.
The rapid is short, but over 80 metres wide and tame. At Akonkoski, the main stream runs along the north bank next to a demolished stone weir. The south bank is a shallow reef and is suitable for wading fly-fishing. Enjoyable surface fly-fishing spots can be found along the main current's edge.
There is no fireplace at Akonkoski, but there is a shelter for a picnic break.
