The Tuscan Archipelago National Park was established in 1996 with the aim of conserving and protecting the biodiversity, landscape and culture of the seven major islands of the Tuscan archipelago and a number of smaller islands.
The main islands that make up the Tuscan archipelago are: Elba Island, Gorgona Island, Capraia Island, Pianosa Island, Montecristo Island, Giglio Island and Giannutri Island.
The Tuscan Archipelago National Park offers a network of hiking trails on all the islands.
The national park is also responsible for the management of 16 visitor centres and historical-archaeological sites located in the Tuscan archipelago, such as the Volterraio fortress on the Island of Elba, the catacombs on Pianosa and the Roman villas on Giannutri and Gorgona.
