Historical hike to South Bohemia, Czech Republic to the village of St. Thomas and the Wittinghausen castle ruins and back to the Helfenberger Hut. Wonderful views of the Bohemian Forest and South Bohemia. Beautiful hiking, meadow, and forest paths, partly on roads in Bohemia.
Author’s recommendation
Visiting the castle ruins is definitely worth it. Beautiful old castle with a central tower, castle walls well preserved. Expansive panoramic views across the Bohemian Forest and South Bohemia.
From the Helfenberger Hut keep right on the forest path until the forest and then keep right directly on a narrow trail crossing the border into South Bohemia. After a short stretch comes a wide meadow, field, and forest path leading to the village of Pasecna (Reiterschlag). Then continue on the road to the junction with a meadow or hollow path. Observe the marking on the road. Follow this path through forest and meadows to St. Thomas. Pass the church to the Wittinghausen castle ruins. Visiting is possible for an entrance fee. Wonderful panoramic views from the ruins. Then back to St. Thomas and shortly hold left along the road to a stop for refreshment - inn/forester's house HAJOVNA SV THOMAS, HOSTINEC. Other options for refreshment available. After strengthening and a break, return on the same path back to Austria and to the Helfenberger Hut.
