In the 16th century, a 40-kilometer-long salt pipeline was built to transport brine from the salt mountain in Hallstatt to Ebensee. Thousands of tree trunks were used for the pipeline, which runs through the villages Bad Goisern, Lauffen, and Bad Ischl. The pipeline was first put into operation in 1607 and has since been admired as the oldest pipeline in the world in the Salzkammergut. On this hike, we pass many sights and are repeatedly informed about life in the Salzkammergut by information boards. Exhibition rooms along the Soleweg can also be visited free of charge daily from May to October. Unfortunately, the path has been closed from the Steeg power plant by Salinen Austria due to the possibility of rockfall. The information boards have become unsightly and exhibition rooms closed. An end to the closure is not foreseeable.
Author’s recommendation
If the 21 km long path is too strenuous, you can take the bus from Bad Ischl to the Steeg/E-Werk stop and shortly after the stop ascend to the Sole pipeline path. (Unfortunately, this is no longer possible since the path has been closed from here!)
Rockfall shortly after the Emperor's hunting statue is not excluded during rain! Warning sign!
From Steeg/Hallstättersee, the path is not passable in winter due to avalanche danger (now completely closed).
The last section from the Gosauzwang bridge is on average a 1.5 m wide and well-maintained path, but there is a risk of falling (extremely steep forest terrain on the left side).
Absolutely do not throw stones down from the Soleweg - state road below the Soleweg!
From the starting point, we walk through the pedestrian zone of Pfarrgasse to the newly designed avenue of the Esplanade. Along the Traun, we now hike uphill to the natural monument Kaltenbachteich by a new road bridge (former local railway bridge). In front of a wooden chapel (bark chapel) at Kaltenbachteich, we turn right and walk through the Kaltenbachau until we finally reach the Soleweg after the ski jumping facility. A short time later, we pass the Emperor's hunting statue (left below the path), which was erected in 1910 on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph. Following the shaded Sole pipeline path, we reach, last a stretch on the paved Engleithenstraße, the historic Lauffen (bus and train station). Here we return to the Sole pipeline path. Past the "Wild Lauffen," a former obstacle to salt shipping on the Traun, our way continues. Walking through larger meadows, we come to the houses of the village Weißenbach in Bad Goisern. On the asphalt road, the Sole pipeline path disappears until it takes shape again after a few meters of ascent at a guesthouse. Here we follow the signposting for Salzkammergut Soleweg Steeg-Hallstatt. The following three kilometers the Soleweg is very well developed and easy to follow. Afterwards, we walk in Bad Goisern 2.5 km back and forth through a residential area (path excellently signposted) until we reach the actual Soleweg again. Now comes the most beautiful stretch of the path (now closed!). After crossing the Gosauzwang bridge, there is repeatedly a magnificent view of Hallstättersee. At the kilometer marker 1 (blue cubes on the right edge of the path), we leave the Soleweg to the left and descend to Hallstatt.
