Waldensian Valleys Loop | Stage 2 Alpe Vandalino - Colle Vaccera
Interesting stage from a historical-environmental perspective, introducing one of the most picturesque areas of the Waldensian Valleys
From Alpe Vandalino, descend towards Sea di Torre, and follow the signs for the Barfè farmhouse, trail 140A, up to the locality of Prato Stella (1294m) where trail 140 begins. The itinerary develops on flat terrain in alpine pastures above the forest level with views over the Angrogna valley, crossing some "cumbals" and some no longer used clearings: Cialaroccia (1336m) and Sapè (1390m) until reaching Embergeria (1381m), a small still active alpine pasture, connection point with trail 138A that leads to the "Al Sap" refuge in about 20 minutes.
From Embergeria, descend into the woods passing through the Ramà hamlet and the locality of Palai, theater of events linked to the persecution of the Waldensians and the Resistance, until reaching Lausa bridge (970m) crossing the Angrogna stream. From here, following the valley road, ascend to reach the locality of Pradeltorno (1000m), an extreme refuge during the period of the Waldensian persecutions from the 15th to the 17th century; then continue to the Waldensian Temple of 1876 and the "Barba College", where a traditional 16th-century "schola" has been reconstructed, in which the itinerant Waldensian preachers (called "barba") secretly gathered to study theological texts. Then reach the forest track, Trail 141, to Fau hamlet, nestled against a huge rock. Continue along a path touching the farmhouses of Turle (1150m), reaching a rock offering a beautiful panorama and, shortly after, leading near the houses of Barma Monastira, built sheltered by a large rock. The path goes into the woods up to Barma dl'Ours (1183m), which in 1944 was the site of the clandestine printing press of the partisan groups of Justice and Freedom. From here follow the indications of the partisan trails (direction Bagnau) to reach "Ca d’la Pais" (1422m), a structure bombed in January 1944 by the Nazi-fascists during an operation against partisan activities and, forty years later, rebuilt by the Waldensian community of Angrogna to become a meeting center dedicated to peace and reconciliation among peoples. From here, a dirt road, trail 150 A, quickly leads to Colle della Vaccera (1465m).
