Andros Trail 15 - Gavrio - Ano Agios Petros - Tower - Beach
Starting from outside of Gavrio this route takes hikers to the settlement of Ano Agios Petros, and then down to the ancient tower on the way to the beach of Agios Petros.
This route starts from the connecting line of Gavrio, through a cement road that soon turns into a dirt road with an uphill slope. Among wild lavender and thyme the dirt road climbs for a kilometer until it meets an asphalt road. Route 15a also starts at this point. Here, taking the last part of the 15a in reverse, the hiker crosses the slope that separates him from the settlement of Agios Petros, through paths, asphalt road and dirt road, to finally end up on the paved stone trails of the settlement. At a fork approximately 500 meters away from the church of the settlement, the hiker will have to choose whether to go up through the streets of the settlement to the church and the fountain at the plaza or to descend towards the tower of Agios Petros and the beach of the same name. The descent through a paved path leads in short distance to the imposing tower which stands below the settlement. It is a building of the Hellenistic era which urgently needs maintenance by experts in order to be saved and recognized as it deserves. The route continues a downhill course of almost 2.5 kilometers which runs along dirt roads and paths between fields and abandoned land to the coastal road of Gavrio. Until there another peculiar building with a vaulted roof catches the eye of the hiker abandoned and half-ruined as it stands in the middle of a field on the left of the path. Ending the route in front of the quiet beach of Agios Petros gives hikers the opportunity to enjoy the coolness of the sea after the hike.
