An imposing semi-elliptical arena in neoclassical style is the symbol of Macerata, in the Marche region. In the past, football was played here with the armband, but today it serves as an open-air theatre and hosts various shows and events, in particular the 'Macerata Opera Festival'.
Also known as 'Lu Sferisteriu' by the people of Macerata, the Sferisterio was built between 1823 and 1829 to a design by neoclassical architect Ireneo Aleandri, who was inspired by Andrea Palladio's masterpieces in Vicenza. It can hold up to 3,000 spectators.
The arena is 18 metres high and 88 metres long, with a row of 56 columns.
It is possible to visit the structure during the day and even attend rehearsals for performances. A guided tour is recommended.
