Instituted in 1991, the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park is the third largest national park in Italy, encompassing a large area in Abruzzo and two smaller areas in Lazio and Marche.
As the name suggests, the park comprises two mountain massifs: the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. The Gran Sasso, with its highest peak, the Corno Grande (2,990 m), is the highest massif in the Apennines.

The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is a paradise for hikers, mountaineers, mountain bikers and horse riders. In winter, winter sports enthusiasts can choose from three ski resorts: Campo Imperatore, Prati di Tivo and Prato Selva.

The Gran Sasso Horseback Trail, a 520 km loop trail that can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by bicycle and is included entirely in the park, can be taken around the Gran Sasso massif.
