A more than cross-border itinerary, discovering three countries: Italy, Slovenia, and Austria. The Italian, Slovenian, and Austrian borders in this area actually meet at a single point on the summit of Monte Forno/Dreilandecke/Pec, just above Fusine in Valromana, a town that the ride passes through. You start from the Tarvisio Boscoverde Station, and ride towards Fusine, a village known for its wonderful lakes with varied facets (depending on the seasonal color of the vegetation), until arriving in Slovenia in the town of Rateče (from where you can also reach Kranjska Gora). On your bike, you continue towards Austria and, after passing the Wurzenpass, you reach Krainberg, then return to Italy through Arnoldstein, which is a town close to the border. The itinerary is a loop with remarkable natural beauty. The ride ends in Tarvisio amidst mountain scenery.

    Safety information

Fairly challenging route. Itinerary not fully passable from December to April due to snow.

    Tips and suggestions

The route takes place on an asphalted bike path from Tarvisio to Kranjska Gora/Podkoren and from Riegersdorf to Tarvisio.
The Podkoren-Wurzenpass-Riegersdorf section is on an asphalted road open to traffic but not busy.

    Roadbook

From the Tarvisio Boscoverde station (alt. 735 m), you immediately take the FVG 1/a cycle path. The bike path, built on the bed of an old railway that ran from Tarvisio to Jesenice, gently climbs to the Italy-Slovenia border along the Rio Bianco valley, historically and currently known for the iron industry and mineral processing. After crossing the border into Slovenia at the Fusine/Ratece pass (alt. 850 m), you descend towards Kranjska Gora, a well-known tourist and winter sports resort in the Julian Alps. After a short visit, the bike path continues towards Podkoren (an ancient medieval village), where the climb to Wurzenpass/Korensko Sedlo (alt. 1,077 m) begins. From the pass, you quickly descend into Austria towards the Gail valley. Midway down, there is an original and rich historical-military museum housed in bunkers built during the Cold War to defend the Austrian border. Then you reach the Riegersdorf junction (alt. 520 m), where you meet the Alpe Adria Radweg and proceed towards Arnoldstein, a border town with several historical attractions, shops, and cyclist services. There begins a gentle ascent leading to the Italy-Austria border at Coccau/Thörl. Continuing on the Alpe Adria cycle path back in Italian territory, you return to the Tarvisio Boscoverde railway station.

    • The State Railways operate several daily trains connecting Udine to Tarvisio, each able to carry over 30 bicycles.
