One of the most famous squares in the old town of Rome, with several fountains and many cafes and restaurants.
The Piazza Navona is one of the most famous and beautiful squares in Rome. Many cafés and restaurants invite you to linger, and there are usually street artists and portrait painters in the busy square.
Built under Emperor Domitian in 86 AD, today only the elongated shape reminds us of the square's original function as an athletics stadium. Over the centuries, several beautiful fountains have been built in the Piazza Navona. The most famous of these is the "Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi" with its characteristic obelisk. The eye-catcher on the west side of the square is the baroque church of Sant Agnese in Agone.
There are several museums to discover around the Piazza Navona, for example the archaeological museum about Domitian's stadium on the north side, the small Gladiator Museum on the east side or the Museo di Roma in the Palazzo Braschi south of the square.
During Christmas time, there is a lovely Christmas market in Piazza Navona.
