The Victor Emmanuel Monument in Piazza Venezia is a monumental memorial in the centre of Rome.
The huge white marble monument in neoclassical style was erected in honour of the first Italian king, Vittorio Emanuele II. The large equestrian statue in the centre represents the king. Although construction began in 1885, the entire complex was not completed until 1927. The Victor Emanuel Monument also includes the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier", a memorial to the unknown fallen soldiers of the First World War.
At the back of the complex there is a museum on the history of the unification of Italy. For an entrance fee of 12 euros, visitors can take a glass lift to the roof of the building (entrance at the back of the monument) and see Rome from above.
