There are a total of 2500 fountains in the city of Rome. The most beautiful and famous of them all is the Trevi Fountain.
Every traveller to Rome should pay a visit to the Trevi Fountain. The artistically designed fountain was built in the 18th century by order of Pope Clement XII. Its water comes from an aqueduct that transported water to Rome in ancient times.
The baroque splendour of the Trevi Fountain amazes thousands and thousands of visitors every year. In front of a magnificent palace façade, the water pours over a rocky landscape with many statues representing sea creatures. In the centre is a statue of Oceanus, the god of the sea.
According to custom, it brings luck to throw a coin over one's shoulder into the fountain – the money is collected regularly and donated to charitable causes.
