The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved buildings from Roman antiquity and one of the most important sights in Rome.
For more than 1700 years, the Pantheon could claim the largest dome in the world. The impressive structure, also called „La Rotonda“, was built under Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD. But there was already a previous building on this site by Marcus Agrippa– hence the inscription „M.AGRIPPA.L.F.COS.TERTIUM.FECIT“ („Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, three times consul, built this“).
The huge dome of the Pantheon is an architectural masterpiece: if you think of the dome as a sphere, it would exactly touch the ground. A special concrete mixture ensures stability without additional reinforcements. The only light source is the 9 m wide hole in the top of the dome.
Once used as a temple for the ancient gods, the Pantheon was converted into a church in the Middle Ages. It also serves as a burial place for some important historical figures, such as the painter Raphael and the first two Italian kings.
