Officially established in 1923, it is one of Italy's oldest national parks.
The park was established to conserve and protect a number of important animal species in the area, including the Marsican brown bear, which is also the symbol of the park, the Apennine wolf and the Abruzzo chamois.
90% of the forests in the park are beech forests.
Public transport
The nearest railway stations are Avezzano (Rome-Pescara line) and Castel di Sangro (Sulmona - Castel di Sangro line), then continue by bus (www.tuabruzzo.it).Daily bus services from Rome to the Park and vice versa are established in summer.
