The Jafferau Battery is located at an altitude of 2,800 meters and is the highest in Italy. The view is exceptional over all the fortified sectors of the upper valley. Together with the Foens and Pramand forts, it is located along the former military road 79 that connects Bardonecchia, Oulx and Salbertrand at altitude.
On the top of the Jafferau ridge, at an altitude of 2788 m, the Jafferau Battery was built between 1879 and 1900 with the role of a defensive but also an offensive work.
The Battery occupied the top of the ridge for a development of about 300 meters and a depth of about 30. It was bordered on three sides by a ditch and on the fourth by an overhanging wall. The main entrance had a portal crowned with square battlements, below it the date 1900 and the titling of the Jafferau Battery. Above the lintel of the portal was applied the Savoy coat of arms. On the crest were the gun emplacements.
Remaining from this battery are the outer walls of the barracks, which still rise to their original height, the development of the inner road, and the interior of some rooms.
Directions
Off-road:
- from Bardonecchia take the road in the direction of the hamlets Millaures and Gleise and continue until you meet at a hairpin bend on the right the dirt road marked "Forte del Foens." Take it, go up hairpin bends in the forest and continue on a flat half slope until you reach Fort du Foens. Proceed on the flat until you meet a fork; keep left, climb up to Col Basset and continue on the ridge until you reach first the Colletta Jafferau Barrack and then the Jafferau Fort.
On foot (3 hours walk):
- From the Frejusia Basins walk toward the arrival of the gondola and, just before the hotel, take the trail on the right that goes up diagonally along ski slope 37-Primavera; follow it until the arrival of chairlift 6 Gigante. Continue on the mule track that climbs with numerous switchbacks to the arrival of the Ban chairlift and then to Mt. Jafferau.
