Die Ehemalige Ersparungskasse wurde von der Regierung 1842 hier gegründet und gebaut.

Sie sollte die zunehmende Verarmung der schwer arbeitenden Bevölkerung verhüten. Heute noch ist auf der Frontseite des Gebäudes das Wappen des „Oldenburgischen Fürstentums Birkenfeld“ zu erkennen.
