Gateway of India is a neo-classical monument located in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was built to commemorate the first visit of King George V and Queen Mary of England to India in 1911.

Gateway of India falls under the category of protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Its foundation was laid in 1913 and the gate was completed in 1924. It is constructed from yellow basalt and concrete. The arch of the entrance is 26 meters high and the monument features intricate stone lattice work. Its architecture is based on the Roman style, merged with 16th-century Gujarati architecture.

After its construction, important British personalities used it as a symbolic formal entrance. Ironically, in 1948, this gate witnessed the oppressive British bidding farewell to India when the last troop of English soldiers boarded a ship here to England.

Gateway of India has also been a target of Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attacks in August 2003 and 2008.

Today, this monument is synonymous with the city of Mumbai and is one of its major tourist attractions. Tourists, locals, photographers, and boatmen are abundant here.
