Built at the behest of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who during a visit to Monselice in 1239 designated the City itself as a “special imperial chamber.” By order of the Emperor, the Church of Santa Giustina (from the 10th century), which at the time stood atop the hill, was demolished and the attached religious structures were repurposed. The Church was later rebuilt lower down (see ancient Church of Santa Giustina). The military construction, organized on several levels, was entirely made of trachyte blocks; the truncated-pyramid base has no access at ground level, and the only possible access is currently at a height of eight meters. The structure remains today embedded in a complex of fortifications, parts of which are traced back to the 6th century.

Guided tours are available every Sunday afternoon from March to June and from September to early November.
