Fondazione Patrimonio Ca' Granda
Founded in 1135 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, this abbey is among the most beautiful in Italy and is still inhabited by monks who follow the rule of St. Benedict.
There are many striking features: from the bell tower - known as Ciribiciaccola - to the cloister; the chapter house; the kitchen garden, where medicinal herbs are still grown; and the medieval mill, restored in 2009 and run by the Koiné cooperative with workshops and guided tours.
Decorating the complex are beautiful frescoes painted between the 500s and 700s by Bernardino Luini and the Fiammenghini brothers.
At the end of the visit to the abbey, we recommend a stop at the monastic store, where you can buy the Benedictines' products and, before returning home, a snack in the in-house bar and restaurant.
