Past the "Hockstein", a rock formation, or the "Bärenhöhle", a cave-like passage in the rock, the Markersdorf nature trail leads to the Amselgrund. On the way back, you can admire the bizarre course of the Chemnitz river in the Schweizerthal with its whirlpools.
Characteristic of the Chemnitz valley landscape are mixed forests rich in deciduous trees with exposed cordierite gneiss blocks. Along the path, many of the 48 native and non-native woody plant species are explained to you on signs and display boards.
Various nest boxes help you get to know the birdlife, with around 58 breeding bird species, including the rare oriole and the native sparrowhawk. With some luck, you might even spot rare animal species like the nocturnal edible dormouse.
