The landscape in the national park is the habitat of hundreds of animal species and about a thousand plant species, many of which thrive in the specific microclimatic conditions of this karst landscape. The highest peak of the Velebit Mountains, Vaganski vrh (1757 m), is also located in the national park. This place is interesting for researchers from all over the world, who explore the 37 caves and 39 pits.
The best climbing spots and via ferratas in the country are located in the Paklenica National Park. The name, which means "little hell" in English, is derived from the many rugged limestone cliffs that characterise Paklenica's landscape. The Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica gorges are particularly worth a visit.
The ascent of Vaganski vrh and Sveto brdo is reserved for experienced mountaineers. However, the park also offers numerous easier options suitable for all types of hikers.
