The town church of Lauenstein is a particularly artistic testament to the impact of the von Bünau family's landowning mining activities in the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition to the remarkable altar, the pulpit and the baptismal font, the valuable Bünau burial chapel from 1609 stands out in particular. The four-storey, pyramidal sandstone altar is one of the most important of its kind in Germany. The epitaph of the Bünau Chapel depicts life-size figures of the founder Günther von Bünau with his wives and children. It is made of sandstone and decorated with high-quality materials such as alabaster, agate and jasper. The ornate decoration was financed by the profits from tin and iron mining, among other things.
Opening times
- From Easter to October: there is a guided tour of the church on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 2 pm.
- From November to Easter, church tours only take place with advance booking for groups of 10 people or more.
