Urwüchsig, unberührt und wild präsentiert sich die  Moor- und Heidelandschaft des Hohen Venns, die man ansonsten nur in weit nördlicher gelegenen Breitengraden finden kann.

Die schier endlos wirkende Weite des Hochmoors fernab von jeglicher menschlicher Besiedlung, gepaart mit der rauen Ursprünglichkeit dieser uralten Landschaft zieht jeden Besucher in seinen Bann.

Das Hochmoor ist mit 4.500 ha nicht nur das größte und älteste Naturschutzgebiet Belgiens sondern auch das wohl berühmteste und das Juwel des Deutsch-Belgischen Naturparks Hohes Venn – Eifel. Seltene Pflanzenarten konnten erhalten bleiben und geschützte Tierarten wie das Birkhuhn und die Wildkatze finden hier Zuflucht. In der Kernzone wölbt sich der bis zu 694 m hohe Schiefer-Gebirgskamm zum Himmel. Hier liegt auch der höchste Punkt der Benelux-Länder – Signal de Botrange.  Das an dieser Stelle eingerichtete Naturparkzentrum Botrange ist der optimale Ausgangspunkt für Unternehmungen im Hohen Venn: es informiert über die Entwicklung der Vennlandschaft und bietet regelmäßige Führungen an.

Die wild-romantische Moorlandschaft  begeistert seine Besucher zu jeder Jahreszeit durch seine unendliche Pflanzenpracht: im Frühling zarte weiß-rosa Tupfen von Moosbeere und Rosmarinheide, im Frühsommer weiße Wollgrasflocken, im Spätsommer und Herbst das lila Heidekraut, nach dem ersten Frost das rostorange Pfeifengras und im Winter die bizarren Silhouetten der knorrigen Moorbirken, die dem Venn eine schaurig-schöne Aura verleihen

Dem Hochmoor, das wie ein natürlicher Wasserspeicher wirkt, entspringen zudem ein halbes Dutzend Flüsse wie Rur, Olef, Warche, Schwalm oder Our.

Während einer Wanderung oder einem Spaziergang lassen sich eindrucksvollen Naturschönheiten des Hohen Venns besonders gut entdecken. Dazu wurden Pfade und Holzstege durch das Hochmoor angelegt. Zum Schutz der einmaligen Flora und Fauna ist der Zugang jedoch reglementiert und in drei Zonen unterteilt. Bestimmte Zonen sind nur in Begleitung von anerkannten Naturführern zugänglich

Der Zugang zum Hohen Venn ist in drei Gebiete unterteilt:

 Die B-Zonen: hier kann sich jeder hinein begeben, aber nur auf eigens angelegten Pfaden und mittels Einhaltung gewisser Regeln.

 Die C-Zonen: hier dürfen nur Personen in Begleitung eines anerkannten Naturführers zirkulieren.

 Die D-Zonen: hier ist der Zugang für die Öffentlichkeit streng verboten.

Die Zugänge können zudem durch die aktuelle Wetterlage (Brandgefahr) oder andere Umstände beschränkt werden.

Hunde sind im Naturschutzgebiet nicht erlaubt, es gibt jedoch eine Auswahl an Wegen auf denen Hunde angeleint mitgenommen werden dürfen.
