On the upper reaches of the river Kajaaninjoki the hunger canal was built in the years of famine 1867-68, which was properly used after deepening at the turn of the century.
Petäisenniska's rapids were cleared from rocks but they were still dangerous to descend. In the 1860s, during the great years of famine, an excavation known as the hunger canal was dug, but it was too low and could only be used when the water was at its highest.
The hunger canal was deepened in the 1890s when tar production was at its highest in Kainuu. More than 3 million kg of tar was then transported along the river, or about 24,000 barrels a year.
