Tunturiaava nature trail, Pyhä-Luosto National Park
Explore the nature of Pyhä-Luosto National Park on a versatile and popular route, where you will see old forest, aapa mire, and the national park's most spectacular fell scenery.
The scent of the aapa mire, a far-reaching view, and an impressive fell chain landscape are the definite highlights of this route. Boardwalks lead to the mire and an easy and varied path guides you through old forest. You can take breaks at the popular Isokuru Kota shelter and lean-to, or at the mire edge Tiaislaavu, where you often see familiar Siberian jays. From the boardwalks on the mire area you can also best see the scale of Isokuru, Finland's deepest gorge. Along the nature trail, there are signs explaining, among other things, traces left by the Ice Age in the middle of the old forest. Thanks to its easy accessibility and short length, the route is perfect as an introductory hike for your holiday or a quick cross-section of Pyhä-Luosto National Park for passing hikers.
Author’s recommendation
Tunturiaava offers the best panoramic views in the national park to the southernmost peaks of the Pyhä-Luosto fell chain.

Safety information
Boardwalks can be slippery when wet. The boardwalks crossing the open mire are narrow, with no separate passing places. The bird watching tower halfway along the boardwalks is out of use due to poor condition, and some of the boardwalks are also in poor condition in places. The route can be completed normally, but please be careful on the boardwalks (updated 7.9.2023).
We recommend boiling or otherwise treating water taken from the water point at the Tiaislaavu resting place before use.

Roadbook
Tunturiaava nature trail, 7 km, circular route
During the thawed season, duration 2-3 hours
Easy gravel and boardwalk route
The route starts from the Nature Centre Naava, where there is also an official parking area. From Nature Centre Naava, the route first follows about 600 meters of a light traffic lane along Pyhätunturi Road towards Kemijärvi. From the Kerontie intersection, a ski track base begins, then you enter the national park which turns into a path at the next intersection by turning right, passing through old forests deeper into the national park. At the four-path junction, you can make choices regarding the route, but normally you turn left towards Tiaislaavu. At Tiaislaavu you can rest and roast sausages while Siberian jays observe the situation or admire the northern lights in the dark. Tiaislaavu is reasonably accessible with all-terrain strollers, but the entire route is not passable with strollers due to boardwalks and stairs.
From the shelter, the route continues along boardwalks to the Tunturiaava mire area, which offers the finest panoramic view of the fell. The boardwalk section can also be skipped by walking directly along the edge of the mire on a path. The path dives into the forest after the mire section, winding through old forest and after crossing a brook towards the mouth of Isokuru. Short stairs lead down to the gorge mouth, and from there the route climbs about 200 steps up towards the Isokuru Kota shelter. The path continues along the edge of the slope towards the national park boundary and slope area. From the slope area, continue on a gravel road to Kultakerontie. From the intersection, turn right down towards Naava. The route can be travelled in either direction.
Route markings and signposts: blue squares on trees and brown metal signs at intersections. From Nature Centre Naava, the start of the route is marked with blue, green, red, and yellow squares.
The route is easy in difficulty, so it is also suitable for example families with children. The route is gravelled and there are narrow boardwalks on mire sections. The route has elevation differences, one set of 200-step stairs and one set of 100-step stairs, and some steps elsewhere along the route.

Parking
The nearest official and larger parking area is found at Nature Centre Naava. Naava is located right in the heart of Pyhä center, beside the roundabout. During the thawed season, you can also park at a smaller family parking area at the edge of the slope area, near the national park boundary. A small gravel road leads to this parking area, turning left at the restaurant site, halfway up Kultakerontie towards Hotel Pyhätunturi. This parking area is not accessible in winter, as the road is a slope area.

Equipment
Usual weather-appropriate outdoor gear, good shoes and weather-protective clothing, as well as map and phone. During the spring flood, we recommend rubber boots or high waterproof hiking boots; otherwise, in summer, the route can be done with regular sneakers. Boardwalks can be slippery when wet. For making fire, matches must be carried, and you must bring your own toilet paper for the toilet.
